A Dining Room Table Makeover

Wow! It has been almost one year right to the day since my last post! You may notice I am a seasonal painter/ blogger but what a year it has been! We have added a new baby girl to our family now making us a family of 4 plus I opened my baby boutique back in July! So now I am a full time working mom (my girls come to work with me).

Even with all of that going on summer has hit and I've been bit by the painting bug once again!

Get ready for a ton of pictures.

I have been wanting to update our dining room for a little while now. The table is so blah and has no style what so ever.
The sideboard I repainted in an antique finish and there is nothing like that in my house...what was I thinking?
The bar stools are in the way for a counter that is never used.
So it was time to spruce it up and all on a budget!
Ready? Lets go!

The makeover all started when I saw these 2 posts on a few Facebook groups I am in:

I've always wanted a round table and this one was FREE! A great start to staying on budget.

Then I saw these over sized lamps for $25. The generous lady gave them to me for $20 and they were perfect for my project!

I took them home and tested them out on the sideboard. I have been looking for lamps to go there but didn't want to pay the $200 plus price tag at the home decor stores. These would do the trick.
Just not in this condition of course.

I went into my furnace room, AKA furniture storage and odds and ends room, I found 2 perfect shades! So yet again...FREE! Now all they need is a little paint.

As I was spraying them and seeing the transformation happening before my very eyes I actually said "Whoa!!" out loud.
I am amazed at how well these cleaned up. Like my mother said "from granny's attic to modern chic!".

Next it was time for the table to be made over.
Look at how sad it is.

We have a new paint retailer in town and I am so tickled! I wanted to try it out for sometime now and what better subject to try it on then this table!

I knew to tie the whole look together the sideboard needed a new coat of paint too!

FAT paint is so nice to work with! Covers great and uses very little for a project! The clear coat dries flat but is so much easier to apply then waxing a piece. I will definitely be using this paint again, I cant wait to try out other colours.

So here is the finished project!

And here is a reminder of the sideboard then and now!

I am so happy with the end result. We still want to find a glass top that we can add to the table for extra durability with two kids but for now we are happy with how it all turned out.

Here is a budget breakdown:

Dining Table: Free
Lamps: $20
Shades: Free
Sideboard: Free
Paint & Clear Coat: $58
Total Makeover: $78

I hope you enjoyed the updates! Thanks for stopping by.

Creating a Command Center

Lately I've been finding myself more and more frustrated with papers, bills, appointments and junk cluttering up my counter!
I needed a space where I could write upcoming appointments so that the whole family could see what was happening in advance, hold incoming mail and place to put those random numbers and scraps of paper.

My solution...a command center.

If you were to ask anyone who knows me they would tell you I am Mrs.Bargain!
I hate to pay more for anything than I need to or something I know I can do myself and look just as good.
So for this project I decided I would collect things rather then head to a store and get them all at once.
I found these two items at a yard sale for around $1 each! Perfect price if you ask me.

Then the following week I found this calendar holder at a yard sale for about the same price! Of course all of it would get a little face lift.

Here is my wall when I first started, pretty boring.

I started by hanging my new items. The bucket was painted black, the cork board painted silver and the calendar holder I painted red on the outside while the inside was done in a chalkboard paint.

Nice, but Something was still missing.
See those 2 magnets on the side of my fridge? They would do just the trick to finish off this new command center.

Now lets hope this does what it is intended for and helps me stay organized!

I hope I've inspired you to try one of your own!

Until next time;
Christina.

Mustard Yellow Mid Century Modern

This past Saturday my husband along with our 3 year old and myself all loaded up in the car and went out for our weekly garage sale adventure.
Only this week they were not very good.
You know, those ones that have on small table in the driveway with 5 old coffee mugs, a picture frame and some junk that no one wants. I'm a huge fan of one mans junk another mans treasure, but come on people there are things you just need to throw away!

Well it was the last sale of the day and when I walked in I instantly noticed this cutie! There was nothing saying it was already sold so I told the lady I would take it!
Score!

She got a new paint job in a mustard yellow and then sealed with a dark wax.

The inside needed a little something special so I decided to paint on some cute triangles.
What a gem!

The Blue Squad- Antique Chair Makeover

I am so excited to share this weeks makeover with you!
I couldn't wait to pick up these beauty's!

Four antique chairs with great character.

Just look at all that detail!
Sadly it did not stand out or shine, in this dreary brown stain.

The seats were a whole other issue, a canvas type floral fabric in a hunter green and burgundy that sends me back to my childhood.

However under that was another fabric that would send my mother back to her childhood! If there is anything I've learnt with re purposing furniture, its expect anything!

The chairs got a couple coats of a deep blue, some distressing and some wax.
The seats got some new pretty fabric!
Look at that pretty detail now!

Here is one last before and after!

A Vintage Tea Cart

I always have my eye out for furniture, not just your basic laminate press board stuff but I like good quality wood pieces. They turn out the best and are so fun to makeover.

I came across this rolling cart and knew right away I had to get it.
Who ever had it in its old life tried to give it a makeover but sadly it didn't look too great.
Do you see all those little squares? Ya those are pieces of paper that have been cut out and glued down!! Then the whole thing was washed in a blue paint but not sealed.
The moment I went to clean it the paint started coming off...not good.
It was time for a change.

And a change she got!

I did the whole thing in a deep teal. Its really hard to photograph for some reason and looks much darker in person. I distressed so that you could see natural wood but also the previous white as well. Then the most important part...she was waxed!

This indoor picture shows her true color better!

Cup of tea anyone?
